Harvest, Alabama has been devastated by tornadoes twice in just
the past year. The small town was destroyed by series of tornadoes in 1974,
then again in 1994, and again last April. The town was still recovering from
April’s damage when it was racked by another tornado on Friday, March 2nd.
The town is situated in the so-called “Dixie Alley”, an area throughout several
southern states where warm-air moisture from the Gulf of Mexico mixes with cold
air coming down from Canada, which is thought to create conditions well suited
for tornadoes. Much of the town is in shambles, and many residents are having a
hard time with the thought of rebuilding again, with the very real possibility
of the destruction happening again soon. Some residents are thinking of leaving
the town for somewhere safer.
